Periodontitis

What is Periodontitis ?

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of Gingivitis, otherwise known as gum disease.

It is a chronic infection in the gums that can breakdown the supporting structure around the tooth (ie. bone)

It is caused by certain bacteria that have been within the mouth untreated or undetected.  The body's immune system is perpetually in 'fight mode' once these bacteria are present.

People with underlying medical conditions & smokers can be at more risk of having periodontitis.

What are the symptoms of Periodontitis ?

There are different degrees and stages of periodontitis.

The most common symptoms are:

  • bad odours in the mouth
  • discoloration of the gum tissue
  • bleeding, tender gums when brushing and/or flossing
  • mobility of some teeth (due to bone levels around the roots being destroyed)
  • 'itchy' gums

How is Periodontitis treated ?

Periodontitis is a treatable condition that can be prevented and stabilized, but once the damage to the bone level is done, major restorative treatments may be required by a Periodontist (Gum Specialist)

If you require further treatment or surgery, we will refer you to a Periodontist.

Various treatment options can be prescribed based on a number of individual factors including lifestyle, diet, oral care regime and personal health.

Treatment may include Hygiene Therapy (scaling and root planning), prescription drugs, oral home care aids and home care instruction.
